A Fresh Perspective on Depression

While the pandemic has led to greater recognition of the legitimacy of mental illness, and in some ways helped reduce stigma, there is still a great deal of judgment and shame that can come for those who struggle with it. To help combat this, I often educate my clients to act as investigators and to think of their emotions as the body's way of providing information or warning to us. This not only helps reduce negative feelings, but also promotes mindfulness in listening to our bodies to be able to better attend to our needs. I recently came across an article that speaks on how depression serves an important purpose for us biologically, and argues that it is actually valuable in saving our lives. If you're reading this, I encourage you to take a moment and give it a read here.
